Two Short Films for a Laugh

It is a dreary grey Monday morning here in the Bay Area. If you need a laugh over your coffee or lunch break today, here are links to two Internet movies that are good for a chuckle.

Ha-Hoa Dang, the Web Assistant for EMILY's List wrote me last week to let me know that EMILY's List, a political network for pro-choice Democratic women, has partnered with the September Fund, a 527 group set up by former Clinton advisor Harold M. Ickes, to post the Fund's video "Vote for Change." As you can see from the screenshot, there are some folks talking to a bush . . . I think you can see where this is going. You can watch it with Quicktime or Windows Media here, or watch it on YouTube.

Last week I went to NetSquared's monthly San Francisco Meetup and talked with Japhet Els, Rainforest Action Network's Online Organizer. He told me about their recent Internet movie, "Petrolius: The Oil Habit," a spoof oil commercial. You can watch it on RAN's site, or on YouTube.

As of this writing, 104,168 people have watched the September Fund ad on YouTube since October 12th and 13,688 people have watched "Petrolius" since September 5th. It is pretty amazing how viral videos have become an integral part of outreach for political and social change organizations.

If you are interested in tools and examples of nonprofits using vlogging and digital storytelling to do their work, check out my notes from last week's NetSquared Meetup in San Francisco.

    Namaskar and ALOHA!

    ICE is back!

With a thumping response last year for ICE 2006, we are now arming ourselves for a second round of presenting a colourful array of short films from around the country. ICE 2007 – the second instalment of the ICE Digital Short Film Festival, promises to be a bigger, bolder, grander version to it’s 2006 counterpart. We proudly welcome all filmmakers and supporters to participate wholeheartedly with us in this mega event.
Culture and awareness are constantly evolving in our world. We believe that film culture is no exception. In fact it evolves faster than we can decipher with new media and technology being discovered almost every other day.

The timestamp of film culture is changing it’s face with every new film, what with several contemporary factors entering the frame. Just so, the film fraternity should also evolve themselves and gel with the ongoing awareness. However, what is undeniable is that eventually we are all human beings, who emote every moment and moreover, are keen to let others know about what we feel. We, as members of the ICE Community have undertaken this festival considering these evolving trademarks of cinema as well as human expression.

ICE 2007 is being planned to raise the bar for a digital short film festival. The event will host more this time around, viz. a larger number of quality films, a larger audience and reach, extra screenings and promotions of awarded films, crucial tie ups, associations and branding. All in all, a complete package to express, celebrate and spread the short film lingo through a varied audience. Let there be ICE!
